Every year we are asked the same question: "What are the top ten gifts for an older person or a person with some physical challenges?" We sell lots of 'giftable' products, like the card shuffler, the voice activated phone dialer, jar openers, large button telephones and oversized TV remotes. In response to the question, we analyzed what people have purchased during previous holiday seasons as well as for Mother's Day and Father's Day.

What our analysis revealed is that some of our biggest sellers are the gifts that people are clearly giving to themselves. These items tend to be more personal, relating to independence in matters of personal hygiene. Some are more mundane, like being able to get through a doorway with a Rollator without scraping your knuckles. Either way, some incredibly helpful items just don't seem to have that 'giftable' quality.

Here are the top 10 gifts no one will buy for you,
in no particular order:

1. The Bottom Buddy is a personal hygiene toiletry aid that holds toilet paper at the end of a long handle. This toilet tissue holder is designed like no other, specifically allowing the user to apply pressure to properly clean the area. It is helpful if your arms are too short or your shoulder is too sore or a dozen other reasons which make it difficult to hold toilet paper and adequately cleanse yourself.

2. Offset Hinges are easy to install and add an additional 2 inches to any doorway. Also known as Swing Clear Hinges, they will actually swing your door clear of the door frame making it easier to get a wheelchair or walker through the doorway.

3. Nail Scissors are 8.25 inches long and feature a unique design that helps individuals who have difficulty bending or swollen fingers. The longer comfortable loop handle allows you to use the strength and control of your whole hand instead of just a few fingers like traditional nail clippers.

4. Light Switch Extenders are terrific if you need the wall switch to be accessible at a lower level. They add 12" to a standard toggle switch, making it easier for a child or a person seated in a wheelchair to reach.

5. Leveron Door Adapters are plastic lever handles that fit over most round doorknobs to provide an easier way to open the door. Push down on the handle with the side of your hand or push up on the handle with the back of your hand. A great alternative to twisting or turning without removing your existing doorknob.

6. The Toilet Safety Frame is a convenient grab bar alternative that gives you two sturdy arms to hold onto while you sit or stand. It has a weight capacity of 250 lbs and attaches to the existing toilet seat, so no expensive construction is required.

7. If you are watching your weight, a Talking Scale can be your partner. Even though the LED display is a big 3/4 inch high, the scale tells you your weight so you don't even have to look at the number.

8. The Dressing Stick with Shoe Horn has a 30" foam grip handle that makes it easier to put on your shoes, reach for dropped clothing or pull up your slacks. The smooth surface of the "S" hook won't poke holes in your sweaters, while it is still strong enough to help you take down a hanger from the closet.

9. The SuperPole is a simple yet elegant floor to ceiling pole that provides sturdy and safe assistance for standing. Use it to help you out of bed, out of a chair - anywhere you need it! The SuperPole is easy to install - no drilling, no screws. It has a high quality gripping surface that is particularly helpful for people with limited hand strength.

10. The MedReady Automatic Pill Dispenser has 28 compartments to store medications. Set up to 4 daily alarms and let this automated pill reminder and organizer do the rest. As the alarm goes off, the tray advances one compartment, allowing you access to the medication in that compartment.

Sometimes we sell more items for people whose vision is diminishing. At other times its products that help them move around their home or get into and out of a car. Our 'hot' products change from month to month as people discover us as a source of products that help them go about their daily lives with more comfort and dignity. Although these items don't usually fall into the gift category, our customers have told us that the products have turned daily struggles into independence and freedom, bringing them great joy.
