Many people throw their budgets out the window in an effort to find gifts that will please the people they care about. But sometimes it's the little things that can make all the difference, particularly to people who struggle to overcome the daily challenges that make it difficult to live independently.

How about including items that will truly bring comfort, day in and day out?

What you should you look for:

Tools to help aching hands open jars, can tabs and bottles:

  • 4 Way Opener Great for bottles and tabs.

  • The Can Pop is perfect to open a variety of pull-top cans, like single portions of soup.

  • Jar Pop breaks the vacuum seal on jars.

  • Twist n' Pop open soda tabs, bottle caps and liter bottle tops.

Maybe some tools that can help them see a difference:

  • Color coded Measuring Scoops and Spoons with big print and big numbers help to measure coffee or bake favorite treats.

  • Keep papers at the correct angle for reading with Page Pal. This brightly colored little stand holds your documents upright!

  • 4X Folding Pocket Magnifier is great for traveling. It folds up neatly to fit any purse or pocketbook and comes in mighty handy for reading maps and menus.

  • Low Vision Cards are easier to see with bigger and bolder numbers. Makes playing your weekly bridge game fun again.

For fingers and hands that may not be as adept as they used to be:

  • Revolving Card Tray stores your playing cards neatly and makes it easier to pickup and discard cards in your favorite games.

  • For quick repairs to a torn hem, the Needle Threader lines up the needle and thread without the eye hand coordination usually required.

  • Nail Guide prevents painful injuries to your fingers when all you wanted to do was hang a picture!

Rather than cologne, how about:

  • No-Rinse Shampoo gets your hair clean without water. It is lightly scented and leaves you feeling refreshed.

  • No-Rinse Bathing Wipes ideal for those who can't get to the shower easily and don't want to sponge bathe at the sink.

There's nothing more precious than a gift of your time and attention. But you need to find ways to offer this gift that won't be insulting or imposing. Consider 'gift certificates' for treats and favors that are not the norm. For example:

  • A ride to and from the location / event of their choice.

  • A favorite meal with all the trimmings, like a Thanksgiving feast in June.

  • A sweet treat or flowers for every week (52 coupons in all for this special gift!)

  • A home repair or weekly chore.

  • Help with organizing that wild box of family photos into a labeled album or a similar project that will allow you time together to share history.

Make sure that this is a gift of your time that you can offer unconditionally. Most importantly, like any store gift certificate, the choice of how and when it is spent is up to the gift recipient. Make sure that when the coupon is redeemed, 'service' is offered without hesitation.

You don't have to empty out your wallet to be extravagant from your heart. Think about what would truly be needed and appreciated, even if it is a little unusual for a gift. Most likely, you will enjoy the giving as much as they enjoy the receiving!
